Realizing that killing a U.S. official would draw an immediate government response, Jones called an emergency assembly at the pavilion. He told his followers that paratroopers would come to torture them and declared that they must commit an act of "revolutionary suicide". [1, 2, 3]

Aides prepared large vats of fruit punch laced with cyanide, sedatives, and tranquilizers. The children were poisoned first. Those who refused were injected forcefully or coerced by armed guards.
